When I think about light energy, I always remember an experience I had as a hospital chaplain sitting with a patient in the emergency room. I don’t remember what brought him in, but I do remember praying for him. Then he offered to pray for me. He took my hand and held it in both of his, my elbow resting on the hospital bed. He prayed in Spanish, too quickly for me to keep up with any hope of translating. But I was too distracted by the tingling sensation in my arm to pay much attention to words anyway. This man was not ordained in any Christian denomination. Yet the Holy Spirit certainly flowed through him. And if I saw him today, I’d definitely ask him for a blessing.

Ordained or not, you have light energy too. It comes from the divine spark within each of us. If you’ve never intentionally used your light to bless other people, here’s a suggestion for how to start. Ever heard of the Care Bear stare? If you’re a child of the 1980s and early ’90s, then maybe so. The Care Bears shine light from their tummy symbols on a given individual, and it has a healing effect on that person. The light of Christ in us can function in a similar way.

If you want to bless someone, whether in your mind or in person, blast them with the light and love of Christ. If you’re in a position to touch the person, let the light travel through your hand. Otherwise, I’d say shine it from your heart rather than your tummy but, hey, your call. Do it for those you like and also those you don’t. Jesus said to “bless those who curse you,” after all. And the next time you try it on someone you dislike, I guarantee it will have a healing effect—most likely on you.

Finally, be liberal in offering your blessings. I love it when someone pauses to read my “Ask me for a blessing” sign and responds by saying, “God bless you!” (The one exception was a man who said it as he creepily looked me up and down. You better believe he got an earful.)

The strangest blessing I’ve received came from a woman walking up the sidewalk while talking on her cell phone. When she got near me, she slowed her pace just long enough to bless me. She took the phone away from her ear, drew a cross through the air with it, and mouthed the words “God bless you.” Then she kept moving, never missing a beat in her conversation.

It was one of the more hilarious moments in my ministry, right up there with the guy who kneeled for a blessing while having breakfast on the go. Not only was it funny, but there was also something I could appreciate about the blending of the sacred with the secular. The juxtaposition of the woman’s cell phone with making the sign of the cross was like the juxtaposition of the man’s breakfast sandwich with his formal posture of kneeling.
